Berlin Overdose (Early 2035) - Event¶
The Berlin Overdose was a near-fatal fentanyl overdose suffered by Ezra Cruz in January 2035, at age twenty-eight, while on tour with CRATB in Berlin. The overdose—caused by a fentanyl-laced pill taken during a spiral of grief, addiction, and fear about impending fatherhood—nearly killed Ezra the same way his father Rafael had died thirteen years earlier. Logan Weston, traveling with the band as Charlie’s medical support, performed CPR for over six minutes and broke one of Ezra’s ribs keeping him alive until paramedics arrived. During the rescue, Logan’s Type 1 diabetes crashed under the physical and emotional stress, and he vomited and fainted while the 911 call was still active. Audio from the emergency call, capturing both Ezra’s near-death and Logan’s collapse, was leaked to the media and circulated widely. Ezra survived and, after an ultimatum from Nadia—then five months pregnant with Raffie—entered treatment for his addiction.
Background¶
By early 2035, Ezra had been spiraling for years. His relationship with Nina had ended in 2029 after she was shot at a jazz club; he held her believing she was dead, and the trauma shattered both of them. Nina left after her recovery—not because she did not love him, but because she could not watch him destroy himself. Ezra’s grief became a nine-year descent into substance use, mixing alcohol, benzodiazepines, painkillers, and cocaine in increasingly dangerous combinations.
His relationship with Nadia began around 2030–2031, both of them recognizing grief in each other and trying to survive pain through passion and chaos. When Nadia became pregnant with Raffie in late 2034, Ezra’s fear crystallized: he was going to be a father, and he was afraid he would fail his child the same way Rafael had failed him. Rafael had died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2022, when Ezra was sixteen.
CRATB was touring Europe in early 2035. Logan was traveling with the band to support Charlie, whose chronic illness required medical coordination. Ezra had been using throughout the tour, concealing it from the band while continuing to perform.
Timeline of Events¶
Slipping the Detail¶
Earlier that evening, Ezra gave his security detail the slip—a pattern he had repeated many times over seven years, and a source of constant frustration for Cisco, who had trained every member of the team specifically in how Ezra behaved when he was about to leave. The warning signs were consistent: restlessness, a tightening jaw, a particular pitch of agitation that meant Ezra was done being supervised.
Cisco was not on duty that night. Two other members of his security team were—both trained by Cisco in Ezra’s patterns. Around eleven PM, they noticed Ezra’s agitation. Ezra told them he was going to bed, and they accepted this. He then left through a service entrance, joined a group heading to a Berlin club, and obtained the fentanyl-laced pill there before returning alone to his hotel room. Reconstructing the night afterward from his team’s reports, Cisco recognized the pattern; he had seen it many times, and had not been present the one time it proved fatal.
The Overdose¶
Alone in his Berlin hotel room, Ezra took what he believed was a familiar pill. It was laced with fentanyl in a quantity his body could not handle. The overdose progressed quickly—respiratory depression, unconsciousness, his body shutting down the same way his father’s had. A member of the band found him unresponsive, and Logan was called immediately.
Logan’s CPR¶
Logan performed chest compressions for over six minutes, breaking one of Ezra’s ribs under the force of them. His hands kept moving even as his own body began to fail.
Logan’s T1D Crash¶
The physical exertion, combined with catastrophic emotional stress, triggered a crash in Logan’s Type 1 diabetes. As his blood sugar plummeted, he began vomiting, his body unable to sustain both the CPR effort and the physiological crisis. He fainted while the 911 call was still active, his collapse audible on the emergency line.
Paramedics arrived to find two medical crises: Ezra dying from a fentanyl overdose and Logan unconscious from a diabetic emergency. They treated Ezra’s overdose with naloxone and breathing support while managing Logan’s blood sugar crash, and both were transported to the hospital. Both survived, though the next hours remained critical for Ezra.
The Leak¶
Someone leaked the 911 audio. The recording captured the chaos of the rescue—shouting for Logan, Logan performing CPR, the moment he began vomiting, the sound of his collapse, band members screaming. The audio circulated widely within hours. Public response was divided between expressions of concern and commentary that treated the recording as spectacle. The release exposed private medical emergencies for both Ezra and Logan without their consent.
Cisco’s Call¶
The call reached Cisco in New York at 4:17 AM. The caller was not one of his team members but Peter, too distressed to speak clearly; Cisco had to ask several times before the picture assembled—Ezra unresponsive in his hotel room, Logan performing CPR, an ambulance on the way. Cisco, who had spent seven years anticipating exactly this scenario and had trained his team against it, had not been on duty and was six time zones away.
Hospital¶
Ezra woke in a Berlin hospital with fractured memory and pain from the broken rib and the overdose aftermath. Peter was present at his bedside. Nadia, five months pregnant, arrived afterward and confronted Ezra with an ultimatum: “You don’t get to die like him. Not you. Not now.”
Logan was recovering from his own crisis in another room. Charlie stayed with Logan, and the band kept vigil through the night.
Participants and Roles¶
Ezra Cruz¶
Ezra, twenty-eight and five months from becoming a father, was the overdose victim. His survival required emergency intervention, hospitalization, and the confrontation Nadia delivered. The overdose marked his lowest point and the beginning of his recovery.
Logan Weston¶
Logan performed CPR for over six minutes, breaking Ezra’s rib while keeping him alive, then crashed from a diabetic emergency caused by the physical exertion and emotional trauma. The leaked 911 audio exposed his medical vulnerability and collapse to the public.
Nadia Beckford¶
Nadia, five months pregnant with Raffie, confronted Ezra at the hospital with the ultimatum “You don’t get to die like him,” pressing him to commit to recovery.
Peter Liu¶
Peter, typically the steady member of the band, was found weeping at Ezra’s bedside.
Charlie Rivera¶
Charlie remained with Logan throughout his recovery in the hospital.
Cisco Medina¶
Cisco was not on duty the night of the overdose; two other members of Ezra’s security detail were working, both trained personally by Cisco in Ezra’s patterns. They followed protocol. The call reached Cisco at 4:17 AM in New York, from Peter. Cisco had spent seven years learning how Ezra behaved when he was about to leave and had passed that knowledge to his team, and was not present on the night it mattered most.
Aftermath¶
Ezra survived but faced a long recovery. The broken rib healed slowly, and the psychological impact of nearly dying took years to process. After the overdose, Ezra entered treatment and committed to recovery; his progress was neither linear nor uninterrupted, but it represented a fundamental shift away from active addiction. He became a father to Raffie, born June 9, 2035, roughly five months after the overdose.
For Logan, the T1D crash during the rescue added to his medical trauma—he had collapsed while saving someone, his body failing him mid-rescue. The leaked audio created a permanent public record of both his intervention and his physical vulnerability.
The leaked 911 audio became a recurring point of public discourse about medical privacy and the non-consensual circulation of recordings from private medical emergencies. The event remained a significant reference point in Ezra’s recovery narrative and in the band’s account of the period.
